eclipsed by the love of synanthrope

August 27, 2026

On this day of the deep partial lunar eclipse,

and the red Sturgeon moon,

suddenly — the love of synanthrope

inspired by a raven who

made such a racket

this morning

en santa fe

where I am visiting

after yearsssss

from where I left

also suddenly—

or maybe I should say

—decisively

off to Spain the minute I could, post pandemic

going going gone into compás de flamenco

but for now

let me science you up a second:

Synanthropic species (also called synanthropes) are animals that live in close proximity to people, benefit from the environments we create, but (unlike domesticated species) are beyond our control.

as if Ravens ever were in our control!

but our companions since time immemorial - yes!

When homo sapiens arrived in North America, they were likely greeted by the croaking calls of our common raven. For millennia, ravens have closely followed our settlements, drawn to the spoils left behind by successful hunts.

the contemplation of them is really calling to me

I even drew one

and something about making the shape

changed the day

and got me writing.

and why the deep in the lunar eclipse?

because the earth’s shadow will appear to eat almost all of the moon

gulp

— all this

the taste

of synanthrope

the moon

eaten in shadow

all this comes into THE WILD LANDS

where after doing Sinew, I am so stoked to ENTER with you

Yes,

Enter the Wild Lands

a four-month online creative circle
starting September 13

twice a month through December end

Sense. Write. Move. Listen. Express.

Out loud. In silence. In community.

where we engage with

our creativity and

animal and bird kin

tweet and greet and

growl and

meet

all to

awaken

somethin’ somethin’ that wants to speak

in us and through us

read the whole

spoken sung broken still trill

of an anthem of the animal coming alive here

From now through September 1

the eclipsed by longing rate is $195

please know that

if $$ is the only thing keeping you at bay

there is no need

just hit reply and say you want in

and we’ll find a way to square it up

and if you feel moved to share this

with more folks:

the eclipse begins at 8:34 p.m. US mountain

may the dark skies see you

may the sturgeon moon sink you

into the skin

of what calls

the sovereign space

and the mystery

of the next true

step

olé

August 18, 2026 In an audio recording - recorded on a cassette no less on a walkman with a record button [remember those], my mother asks my grandmother. "What were your favorite subjects in school? " "Poetry and singing," my grandmother replied. They spoke in English but I heard the Gujurati roots in the voice of my grandmother, or Kutchi more like it, for that is where was from originally, the Rann of Kutch a vast expanse I have never seen. Today is her birthday and on occasion of her...

August 16, 2026 There is tissue in sinew connecting a body in pain with a body coming out of it. There is an animal, the desert and an invitation to enter the wild lands within - yours, mine, ours. There are odes to moments without shame or blame. Also, dance, song, shayari-poetry and me! Sinew, a 30 minute online performance is on Tuesday, August 18 at 11:11 am US mountain time (check your time here). Dear friends, you are invited! Here’s the YouTube live stream link. All you gotta do is...

August 8, 2026 Dear friends: Ooh something new. It was taking time to show its shape but now, here it is. enter the wild lands There's a place in the body where no one is welcome except your own voice. A sovereign space. A rogue state that has ceded from the union - so long, uncle sam! A space where no one is welcome, not even angels bearing chocolate or spirit animals. "Please leave your spirit animals at the door." The walls of this place are made of 118 elements from the periodic table...
